SURFACING TIME

Surfacing Time is using participatory photography methods to surface, create and share stories about long histories of violence and discrimination experienced by the Batwa people living in Rwanda.   Through participatory photography and storytelling workshops, the project aims to support Batwa community advocacy for changes in public perception and government policy.  It brings together academic researchers from King’s College London, AIMPO (a Batwa-led advocacy group) and the Kigali Centre for Photography.  In November 2019 I supported a collaborative planning and design process in which the project partners came together and worked with the Batwa community to devise a project plan and framework.  Surfacing Time workshops and activities will take place over 2020.

Surfacing Time is part of the #Rights4time research network which consists of interdisciplinary projects across Kenya, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Rwanda. The network aims to bring the hidden legacies of conflict directly into humanitarian protection, and human rights policy and practice.
